Family-focused business stays true to their roots

Tucked onto the side of 9 Highway, close to historic downtown Parkville, is Heritage Landscape, formally Miller’s Landscape and Lawncare. It has been around since 1963, but in 2013, Mike and Lauren Perdue became the primary owners, and along with Mike’s father Randy, are working to make the company their own while maintaining the family-owned values and ties to the community the company has had since the beginning.

“We’ve been slowly growing since 2013, making our own brand with new truck colors, new logos. There have been some challenges in that, but it’s been fun and hard work. We are looking forward to continuing to grow the company. We are a family business with family values that has the environment and our people’s best interests at heart,” General Manager Randy Perdue says.

It truly is a family business. Randy has been involved with the landscape business for over 44 years, owning and operating a landscape company in Southern California for decades before coming to Missouri. This company gave Randy’s son Mike his first jobs in landscaping, which he returned to after attending college. Even Randy’s older son Eric owns a small landscaping company out in California. Mike’s wife Lauren is also a partner, and is involved with customer relations and networking; however, she is currently focusing her attention at home, raising their three daughters, the youngest born just this last January.

“We picked the name Heritage, because the roots of our company are based on generations of landscaping. I’ve been involved since I was 15, and have spent time doing everything from digging ditches to managing. I have a degree in aeronautical science, but after an old football injury cut that career short, I turned to landscaping. I learned how to use the CAD system to create designs, and designing outdoor spaces is what I really enjoy doing,” Managing Partner Mike Perdue says.

The Perdue’s extend their family ideals to their employees. Number of employees varies by the season, but ranges between 20-45. While the Perdues believe strongly in the “customers come first” idea, their employees are equally important.

“We’re not a big corporation, but a small local one. Our employees are an asset, and we have an excellent group working for us. We want to have the best employees, and we try to treat them the best we can to get the best customer service for our customers,” Mike says.

Heritage Landscape focuses on Kansas City Metro, mostly North of the river but has jobs in the southern parts as well. They do both residential and commercial, installations and maintenance.

“We are a full service landscape company, which means anything outdoors. We can do patios, plants, trees, decks, pergolas, outdoor kitchens, water features-literally anything outdoors. Whether a single turf application or an elaborate outdoor living space, nothing is too small or too large. We coordinate everything from the initial research and design to the installation and the maintenance that follows. Site appeal and proactive service are everything to us. We’re devoted to landscape perfection and committed to your landscape goals and total satisfaction. Our goal is to create an experience that makes each customer want to become a customer for a lifetime.  We want to be a partner in one of our customers’ most valuable assets,” Randy says.
